Meeting @ Armijo

Written on August 25, 2010 by moe2love

Although I just graduated from Armijo, one of my good friends Kaila Cauthorn is going to be holding a meeting in the school so she can start her own Teen Publish Club.  I’m planning on making a lot of changes to this site, and getting it hopefully much more active (assuming I’m not going to be a lazy ass).

If you’re reading this, I hope you come to the meeting.  It will be really worth it, because writing to help others can be a rewarding experience and this will be reaching out to as many people as possible.

Thank you,

Introducing Tray Eberle, a Beginning Teenage Artist

Introducing Tray Eberle, a 16 year old up-and-coming Acoustic and Pop artist from Georgia.  The first thing that sets Tray apart from most artists is the fact that he doesn’t just write music for people to relate to, but he writes music for himself.  Tray writes about everything that he has been through in his teenage years, whether it be Love, Death, Loss, Friendship, or Depession.  But no matter what he writes, Tray is determined to let everyone into his life… One word at a time.

Not only does Tray have substantial vocal talent himself, but he also has a family background of notable singers.  His grandfather, Ray Eberle was a lead singer on the Glenn Miller orchestra, the “most sought after big band in the world today”.  Their music comes from the notorious Big Band Era, when large jazz orchestras were more popular (you may or may not know this, but our contemporary music is only a large derivative of jazz music).

If you’d like to enjoy Tray’s new acoustic song, enter his MySpace music profile and click on the play button.  The song is called “Destiny (Our Anthem)”

Staying Overnight in UC Berkeley (OSP)

A giant, looming campanile stands over the campus of UC Berkeley, extending its dominating presence over all those

who dare to run late on its prestigious grounds.  Along strawberry creek, a group of students collect samples of the water for their science experiments.  A lone old man stands in the middle of the square, dangling a watch from his fingers, his eyes locked on the object that fascinates him for reasons unknown. Another homeless man yells at those who dare to use any form of science in front of him.  In the Greek houses by the Clark Kerr dorms, walls shake to the bumping music of sorority parties.

This past weekend I participated in the Overnight Stay Program (OSP) at UC Berkeley. I was the only one from my school at this program (no one else even knew this existed), and I enjoyed it immensely. The experience was amazing, and it was well worth the 90 bucks (in my opinion, the experience was even better than prom, although that’s debatable).  By taking this program, I truly understood the hype behind the Cal Bear experience.

Bears: The Superstitious Animals of California

We first started the program with a tour of the campus. Our tour guide told us about the numerous superstitions of UC Berkeley.  One of them revolved around the statue of the Greek goddess, Minerva (not actually Athena as many believe, but essentially her Roman counterpart) in front of the library.  The belief goes that when walking into the library entrance Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, will imbue you Read More

The Efficiency of our Government

I’m not one to spend a lot of time cynically complaining about our government, but its agencies have been quite active

All who consume will live a cursed, immortal life

All who consume will live a cursed, immortal life

lately working hard on making things right with this world.  For example, lately they have been trying to stop the sales of “unicorn” meat – an April Fool’s Joke that ThinkGeek started this year.  Yes, that’s right – ThinkGeek, a company that specializes in producing, well, geeky products, has been given a cease-and-desist order by the National Pork Board (heard of this before? It was founded by the Pork Act) on their production of Unicorn meat.  Apparently, their slogan – “The New White Meat” will result in consumers confusing Unicorn meat with “Pork: The Other White Meat”.  Interestingly enough, that slogan is going to be changed soon anyways, so could we list this as another example of an agency using its power just because it can? Yeah, we probably could.

Here’s another benevolent act a government agency has committed for the betterment of American society.  A while ago, a shipment of toy airsoft guns were confiscated because apparently they can be converted into machine guns… REAL ones.   Every gun expert has denied that this has true, and that there’s no way that “anyone with knowledge of guns” can turn a toy airsoft gun into a machine gun – for one thing, the bullet rounds just wouldn’t fit.  Feel free to watch and decide what you think: YouTube Preview Image

Over 3000 negative Amazon reviews on J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings? Why?

“New Line should be ashamed of themselves at this most blantant example of double-dipping. They clearly have put on the ring and are in cahoots with Sauron.”

I’m talking about the HD version of the films by the way : ).

I just watched Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring extended DVD version for the first time, I’ve practically lost count of how many times I’ve seen the epic tale’s theatrical release myself.  After finishing, I could not only wonder whether there was a Blu Ray format coming out to where I could see LOTR in full HD quality.  Upon browsing on Amazon, I noticed they recently threw out a  3 film box set, but noticed that there was over 3,000 ONE (1) star reviews with only 350 , 5 (FIVE) star reviews.  Why?  I personally rate the films 10/10 and same with the book, and it is well known that Amazon reviews are the real deal untarnished reviews.  I say, why the hate?

Lord of the Rings HD edition Blu Ray, but no extended?

I then found out that the filmmakers had done it again: release the theatrical release again and plan to re-release the extended version on HD, after it was ALREADY made.  I mean, it makes sense for the first time.  So you’re going to release a re-release of re-release of a re-release?  Great way to piss your fans and collectors off tbh.

Some comments from Amazon that made me just laugh were:

24 (Twenty Four) ends its season finale with a cinematic ending!

Kiefer Sutherland, 24 Finale

Keifer Sutherland 24 Season & Show Finale

My favorite show of all time ended just last night with its last season and season finale.

For those of you that haven’t checked it out, you are REALLY missing out.  It had the best cinematic ending ever.  I truly did not expect President Taylor to come clean as she did, it takes a true person to do so.  Furthermore, I completely sympathize with her reasons for wanting to keep the peace treat.  I believe the biggest mistake on her part was just to trust President Logan.  This is a classic example of how a conspiracy & lies snowball into uncontrollable fixation.  One lie after another.  We can call this the “untruthful snowball effect”.  Ex-President Logan (Gregory Itzin) had an end deserving of what was coming to him, but I did not like how he killed his own aide with the classic gunshot through the pillow (I never got why they do that, maybe because they won’t to see the face of the murdered man?  I’m sure a psychologist could write a novel on why..).  Moments before I figured out Charles Logan was going to go all Hitler-esque (a referral to Hitler’s suicidal end with gunshot), I was thinking “show what’s Logan’s next move”?  What’s the Russian president going to do?  I definitely DID get a kick when Jack Bauer went Mike Tyson on Jason (Logan’s aide).. bought him and Chloe O’Brian a few more moments. Fox’s hit 24: Jack Bauer’s PWNing away on a vengeance (finally!)

Jack Bauer pwning away on a vengeance!

Jack Bauer pwning away on a vengeance!

I was watching the hit Fox show Twenty Four (24) and the way the season’s been turning out has given me some insights on the way Jack Bauer’s character has turned out.  For those of you that haven’t seen 24 probably will not know the character names I talk about here, but hopefully understand the point of this post =).

Jack Bauer is (or was) a true protagonist of American cultural heroics (or the definition of “hero” in any culture), the good guy that avoids killing bad people but stopping them no matter the cost.  Jack Bauer’s methods may have been questionable, but the audience always knew that he was doing it for good reasons. From my memory, Jack has lost several women in his past, including through death, and he allowed the justice system to take over after capturing said individuals.  We all know the justice system has its disarrays of corruption.  The bad guys with the connections have the best chance at getting away (example, Charles Logan).  Its tough to change a bad guy into a good guy, so he/she will come back at you with revenge on their mind. Senior Trip – Definitely Lived up to my Expectations..

Written on May 17, 2010 by moe2love

As the safety checkers made sure we were strapped in, my feet tingled with anticipation as if it knew the stress and pain it was about to go through again.  As it was my third time riding Flight Deck (previously known as Top Gun), I had lost

This ride was even better at night

This ride was even better at night

all notions of fear and instead was preparing to have adrenaline course through my veins, bolstered even more so by the fact that I was sitting in the very front seat.

The “flight attendant” (really just the guy handling the controls) counted down… and as soon as he reached one the roller coaster jerked forward and began climbing, making the scary rickety noise that tends to scare people into thinking it’s weakly constructed. This, of course, prompted everyone to make the same jokes about Final Destination that we’ve heard all day.  The coaster slowly travelled to the top, and once we travelled beyond the platform our legs were dangling above a wide open space of at least 100 feet.  Then the coaster reached the top, and it stayed there for just a moment. Then all of a sudden, it dropped! The acceleration of the roller coaster felt like it was going at superhuman speed, and I was travelling with it.  As I went through the loop de loop and a nicely made Zero G Roll, the blood rushed to and away from my feet, repeatedly making it seem as if my feet were going to explode off my legs (brutal description, I know, but it really wasn’t a very good experience for my feet.  The adrenaline that had finally reached my brain, however, made it a very good experience for me).

But then all of a sudden, the coaster headed toward the water. Panic entered me. I didn’t remember this part of the ride, and I was sure that I was going to make painful high speed contact with the water.  My heart skipped a beat as I was about to touch the water when all of a sudden the ride yanked me away from the death throes into another insane loop-de-loop.  I would’ve sighed with relief if I didn’t have the involuntary reaction of yelling for the rest of the ride. No wonder I was forgetting things about the ride so easily.  I didn’t have time to concentrate on any one portion of the ride.  Even on the third time of riding fight deck, the thrilling ride still managed to surprise me and instill within me with a strong dose of adrenaline (although the ride finally began to follow a pattern of lethargy by the seventh ride).

That was just one of the numerous enjoyable moments I had a couple nights ago during senior trip at California’s Great Adventure.  We also went on many other exciting attractions, and after dinner even played an intense game of volleyball for 2 hours.  The great thing about this trip was that we were given a great number of side perks that were well worth the money we paid.  We were given free drinks all day, ten bucks for lunch (courtesy of the Senior class), dancing after dinner, and we got to ride all the attractions as much as we wanted after 6, the normal park closing time.  This way we basically didn’t even have to wait in line any more.

Deciding to go on senior trip was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made this year, and I’m glad I got the money together to go.  The experience was well worth it, and I truly enjoyed spending time with the other seniors only three weeks before graduation.  If you ever have the choice between choosing to go to Senior Trip and not, I hope you choose yes.

Dear Future Self .. seeing how you will be years later

Dear Future

I was taking a look at one of John Chow’s blogs at his website, and struck across an interesting future projection article.  I like one of his quotes by the way “The path to success is paved by a string of failures.”  That’s a good piece of advice, ask your parent if you don’t believe me.

Remember those time capsule projects that you’ve heard about?  There were elementary schools around the US that would place every students document or note in a time capsule and dig it up.  Then come 25 years later, they would pull it out at a celebration and you would get to see what you had put about your future when you were age 10.  Of course, things turned out quite different then what you may have expected.

Now I would like to offer you the opportunity to build your own “time capsule”.  Theres a service called FutureMe.org, where you can write an email to yourself and state the following:  What you doin now, How much are you making, where are you living, what are your current plans, etc.  Then set yourself to be emailed, say a year from today.  Or longer.  Chances are you will forget about it, then as soon as you get that email you can wow in amazement if your goals & everything remain the same.  Especially if you set yourself to be emailed 5 years from today.

Remember, your future is going to consist of the foundations you lay out for yourself today.

Maybe we should set some sort of future blog post type of service, ha ha.

What’s your inspiration?

Having an inspiration is important in life.  It keeps you where you want to go, and sticks you to your ground with goals.  A lot of times people want to emulate their inspirations & their way of thinking.  Inspiration develops motivation, and motivation is what keeps you to your successful goal.

Your inspiration can be anything.. ranging from a book to an article you read, or even a person.  For instance, if there’s a particular person who can be your inspiration.. then follow his footsteps if possible.  One of my inspirations is celebrity Will Smith… and the trait that influences me a lot is his positivism.  Him being the positive person he is, is one of the reasons why his success has been great in his profession.  Don’t underestimate the importance of being positive.

I would like to keep this blog short, and please post a comment for the inspirations that are in your life, and the reason for that particular thing being your influence.

Thanks.

Dialated Cardiomyopathy

Written on February 2, 2010 by moe2love

Your heart is the most important muscle in your body, and as so it is prone to many dangers.  These dangers have usually been diseases that can be avoided by exercising, such as blocking of arteries and increased heart pressure.  But now scientists are getting wind of a new kind of heart disease that isn’t at all affected by how fit the heart is: dialated cardiomyopathy.  Some cases of dialated cardiomyopathy have a clear cause, such as autoimmune mechanisms not working properly or an invasion from viral myocarditis.  Unfortunately, most cases of dilated cardiomyopathy are described as idiopathic, which essentially means “disease of unknown origins”.  That’s what’s so scary – doctors know NO confirmed cause for most of the cases, and the only real cure for these cases is a heart transplant.

You should be aware of this disease and know that although you may be perfectly fit, there are still diseases that may infiltrate your body.  There are 3 million cases of cardiomyopathy, and a quarter million deaths occur from this disease every year.  One of the cases is about a teen who, as a rugby player, has been physically fit all his life – yet for some strange reason, his performance in sports begin to scarily dwindle.  When he once could run many miles without exhausting himself, after ten minutes of rugby practice he feels exhausted.  To read about this teen’s experience with this disease and how it affected him, check out this article on StanMed – it’s an interesting account that I believe is important to read about.  You also get to see the teen smile while holding his own heart – it’s a little strange, isn’t it?

A Break?

No, NOT of a Kit Kat bar, although it is very delicious (but definitely not nutritious – see my article on the nutritional value of chocolate)

Teen Publish has taken a little bit of a break – no new articles published since last week,  although we have received a couple drafts (which were all fantastic ideas and writing – I’m looking forward to seeing the finished work).  I apologize for the lack of activity – this past week has been insanely busy for most of us, and it can be very difficult to write with so much going on.  I promise that we will begin activity soon enough with as much flair as before – and if any of you haven’t started writing articles yet, keep in mind we can use all the contributors we can get.

I do have one bit of advice, though.  In most high schools, right around now preparations for the homecoming skit are going on.  As a high school student, I suggest that you should participate because the interclass competition can be very fun, and putting on a successful skit is a rewarding experience.  You will get to meet new people and have fun working together to build something. Join even if your class’s practices have already started – most of the time, they’re willing to take on more people to help anyways.

With that in mind, I hope you all have a good weekend.

Improving Your Voice (For Dudes)

Written on January 17, 2010 by moe2love

I told my friend the other day that I was considering writing an article on “improving your voice”.  His response was something like “WHAT?? What could be lamer than wanting to improve your voice? What possible benefit could a better voice even have in your life?” I’m not sure if it was sarcasm or not, but either way his pitiful attempt at criticism ensured me that I absolutely needed to write this article.

Actually, a better voice can benefit you in many ways.  A strong, determined voice improves your speaking skills, which in turn can enhance the way you present yourself.  A strong speaker takes command of the room in every debate, grabs attention from guests in every party, and for us males who play the game, attracts women from every venue.
